Modified Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass V

April 23rd, 2013

What’s up fam!  So I have some great news!  I finally got that perfect back up bass!  Ironically, it’s a Sadowsky MV-5!  I caught a great deal on a used one in great shape.  Thank God that the search is over!  Yeah, I know, you guys are thinking that I should have done that a long time ago.  Well, the up side is that I got to experiment with some different basses and electronics… only to confirm that I simply just love Sadowsky basses!

Okay so back to the reason for this post.  I’ve been doing a great amount of studio time lately and have been dealing with those pesky engineers that only want to see a Fender bass.  I understand the history and significance of this “request”… but I think my Sadowsky is way better in many regards.  At any rate, I took this as an opportunity to experiment yet again.   I decided to go with a Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass V because the neck seems to be just a bit longer than the American standard and it gets me just a little bit closer to the 24 fret that I’m used to playing.

I upgraded the pickups and preamp, opting for Lollar Single Coil Jazz bass pickups (direct Fender fit) and a Sadowsky pre (I really trust that preamp in any situation).  The Lollars are very impressive!  I first learned of them while testing out some Bill Nash basses here in Atlanta.  The tone was amazing and consistent!  I typically play using it’s incredible passive tone in the studio, and I prefer to use the pre when I’m playing live.  The combination is impeccable. I’m very happy with the way that this turned out.  This one’s definitely a keeper!

I don’t know if I’ve formally shared this with you guys or not, but I’ve recently started playing with Grammy nominated artist Anthony David. The ride has been incredible so far and some major things are coming through the pipes very soon! Until I can share more with you, check out this video of our performance in Hunnington Beach at the BB Jazz Festival back in September this year.

The Carvin Has Arrived!!!

February 14th, 2012

The Carvin B50 has arrived!

Hey guys, the Carvin I ordered finally arrived on February 7th! I ordered the bass on 11/28/11, so it took about 2 months from order to completion. I paid for the bass in advance, which turned out to be somewhat of a “sour” moment, only because they never sent a notice or email that the bass had been shipped, and I wanted to make sure I was home to sign for it.

Another bassist on YouTube ordered a B50 about a week before I did, and he advised that I contact my sales advisor because the factory was running a week or so behind, in which he wasn’t notified. My advice to you guys is that if you really want to know when your bass is on it’s way to it’s new home, that you wait and pay closer to your completion date. They won’t ship the bass without payment in full, and this way they’ll be forced to keep you abreast of your build info. If you call and ask about your bass, just know that it may take a day or so for them to get info from the guitar department.

I was very excited about receiving my bass and I wanted to post info about it on the blog on that very day, but I decided to wait until I had time to try it outand see what I really thought about it first. So here we go!

Fender Squier Affinity Jazz Bass V

December 15th, 2011

Hey guys! I wrote an article lately speaking about my desire to find a great backup bass and in it I mentioned that I bought a few inexpensive basses and modified them for better sonic quality.  Well here’s a clip of one of the basses, a Squier Affinity V.  It was modified in the following way:

  1. Shielded the control cavity
  2. Changed to CTS pots
  3. Installed Nordstrand NJ5F pickups
  4. Installed a Nordstrand 2B Preamp
  5. Wired the controls to be Vol/Blend/Bass&Treble Stack.
Check out the clip and let me know what you think.  It wasn’t quite what I was looking for, but incredible nonetheless.  I’m thinking about selling.  I can’t describe exactly what I want, but I will definitely know it when I hear it!!!  Cheers!

London At A Glance…

August 10th, 2011

I’ve been traveling a lot lately but I’ve neglected to share my pictures as I have in the past.  In an effort to do better, check out some random pictures that I took while in London earlier this year. Maybe these pictures will remind everyone of the city’s beauty during peace time.  My prayers go out all of the people that are affected by the riots currently occurring.  God Bless.

Life Bike - Photo Taken by Demonterious Lawrence

It’s always cool to encounter artwork that is seemingly placed at random so that the world can stumble upon it.  I wouldn’t even know where to begin in trying to decipher the true sentiment behind this.  First glance led me to feel that the colors represent vibrant life, the flowers represent a growing fragrant life.  Although chained, this bike can also represent the bondage in which so many people life, despite the fullness of life that lives within them.

This was an incredible pic.  I took the pic as I initially saw the scene – through the scooters.  The colors are what really inspired me to take the picture.  In addition to the first two pics, the following two pics were taken in Camden Town. » Read more: London At A Glance…

Jahah Performance at Club Fuzion in Atlanta / NOSTALGIA CD Release

July 11th, 2011

My homie Jahah is a Hip Hop / R&B artist based in Atlanta, GA.  A little while back I had the opportunity to organize some of my musical buddies and put together a band for a show supporting the release of his new project entitled “Nostalgia”.  The band featured Carlos Simon on keys, Larry Newson on drums, Rod Harris on guitar and yours truly on bass.  Check out the footage from the live show!

I also had the opportunity to play bass on and co-produce a few tracks on the album!  In Jahah’s own words:

“For those of you who miss the “golden era ” of hip hop (Biggie, 2 Pac, Nasty Nas, Jay-Z, A Tribe Called Quest, KRS-One, Gang Starr, Black Moon, Wu-Tang etc) my project Nostalgia RED is for you!”

The album is available on iTunes and Amazon or you can download it for free!

Soul Fest 2011

January 9th, 2011

I had a really great show this past weekend!  Angie Stone was the headliner at an event called Soul Fest at the House of Blues in Atlanta City, NJ!

The show featured Jaguar Wright, Ledisi, and Angie Stone.  All three artists put on incredibly great shows and there was an impromptu performance from all three artists in the end paying homage to Soul music and it’s roots.  Our fingers are crossed… the response was so great that we are hoping that this turns into a tour!  Wouldn’t you like to see that?!?!?!

We were all a little afraid of that the weather had in store for us this weekend.  When we left Atlanta, everyone was predicting a huge blizzard to attack New Jersey and New York.  Luckily it only snowed for an hour or so and the conditions weren’t bad at all.  Then our concerns shifted towards the incoming inclement weather back in Atlanta, but we heard things would hold off for us until we arrived.  Great ending right?  NOPE!!!… because we make it to the plane to find out the the navigational computer in the plane would not boot up!!  So I was still stuck in Jersey until they could get another one in from Baltimore.

We finally made it back to Atlanta and we did so before the snow started here!  Thank God!  It was cool though, because I was able to be on the beach in the snow for the first time in my life!!
