Singing For Pounds

July 12th, 2011 by demonterious 1 comment »

We were in London and thought it we be fun and kinda silly to hustle up some English pounds for our lunch.  The crew put on an impromptu street performance in the middle of the Camden Town shopping district.  Hilarity ensues as expected!! I think you’ll definitely enjoy this!!

Jahah Performance at Club Fuzion in Atlanta / NOSTALGIA CD Release

July 11th, 2011 by demonterious No comments »

My homie Jahah is a Hip Hop / R&B artist based in Atlanta, GA.  A little while back I had the opportunity to organize some of my musical buddies and put together a band for a show supporting the release of his new project entitled “Nostalgia”.  The band featured Carlos Simon on keys, Larry Newson on drums, Rod Harris on guitar and yours truly on bass.  Check out the footage from the live show!

I also had the opportunity to play bass on and co-produce a few tracks on the album!  In Jahah’s own words:

“For those of you who miss the “golden era ” of hip hop (Biggie, 2 Pac, Nasty Nas, Jay-Z, A Tribe Called Quest, KRS-One, Gang Starr, Black Moon, Wu-Tang etc) my project Nostalgia RED is for you!”

The album is available on iTunes and Amazon or you can download it for free!

Angie Stone Performance Celebrating Poland’s EU Presidency

I had a really cool gig a couple of weeks ago!  I traveled to Warsaw, Poland to perform with Angie Stone in a concert series celebrating Poland’s new Presidency of the European Union.  This is an incredible honor that rotates throughout members of the EU every six months.  An estimated 20,000 people were in attendance and the concert was broadcast live throughout the country!

Soul Fest 2011

January 9th, 2011 by demonterious No comments »

I had a really great show this past weekend!  Angie Stone was the headliner at an event called Soul Fest at the House of Blues in Atlanta City, NJ!

The show featured Jaguar Wright, Ledisi, and Angie Stone.  All three artists put on incredibly great shows and there was an impromptu performance from all three artists in the end paying homage to Soul music and it’s roots.  Our fingers are crossed… the response was so great that we are hoping that this turns into a tour!  Wouldn’t you like to see that?!?!?!

We were all a little afraid of that the weather had in store for us this weekend.  When we left Atlanta, everyone was predicting a huge blizzard to attack New Jersey and New York.  Luckily it only snowed for an hour or so and the conditions weren’t bad at all.  Then our concerns shifted towards the incoming inclement weather back in Atlanta, but we heard things would hold off for us until we arrived.  Great ending right?  NOPE!!!… because we make it to the plane to find out the the navigational computer in the plane would not boot up!!  So I was still stuck in Jersey until they could get another one in from Baltimore.

We finally made it back to Atlanta and we did so before the snow started here!  Thank God!  It was cool though, because I was able to be on the beach in the snow for the first time in my life!!

Misty – Impromptu Performance

I was in Bermuda recently for a gig with some buddies. After our soundcheck and a lunch that they prepared for us, we noticed a grand piano just to the end of the hall. My buddy Carlos walked over and began to play and James joined in on the fun. I caught a little of it and here it is!

I’ve been meeting a lot of local hip hop artists at our shows.  There will be video coming soon that will highlight some of these artists to show you what hip hop looks like in Peru.  The people I’ve been meeting have some very strong opinions on the state of hip hop.  These views and a few performances are all coming up really soon.  Keep checking the site for more!

AFAR workshop on hip hop in Trujillo, Peru

What’s up everybody?  It’s really been a while since I’ve last posted about AFAR and our travels.  We were recently invited to Peru to do our instructional workshops and concerts at the Bi-National Centers, where people are given an opportunity to come and learn English.  This trip has been a little different, and easier, in that almost everyone that we come across are either learning English or have become very fluent in English.

Elections and Perceptions

Obama Paranoia

Today was election day in the United States.  A lot of people take for granted all of the lives that were given so that every citizen of America could have the right to vote.  It saddens me that America has so much freedom that people use their own freedoms against the machines that provided us with the current rights we have, just because we are citizens.  Television and radio are filled with ads that encourage people to vote.  This is so crazy to me because teenagers will run to the DMV the moment they are of age to obtain a driver’s license, the under-served will stand in lines for hours to receive financial assistance,  your average joe will spend his last dollar on a lotto ticket and the “chance” to win, but all of these people have to be encouraged to vote.  Is it that they don’t see the benefit of voting?  I don’t know.  I’m going to ponder this a little more, we must find a solution.

I was in the Netherlands this past weekend when I came across the magazine seen above.  The photograph and the caption truly caught me off guard, but when I really looked at it, I wondered why such a cover story was even possible?  I’ve seen first hand how the world truly watches every aspect of America and responds to the cues that we send out.  There are some special interest groups that are truly trying to discredit Obama in any way possible with overt and covert tactics that inadvertently cross the seas and influence the perception of America.  The recent, often childish nature of politics has created a very bad image of America, and all for seemingly for the personal gain of these special interest groups and not America as a whole.  Often when I travel I’m very proud to be an American, but I’m always cautious because I’m just not sure anyone else is happy to have me around.

A Bridge…

I took the picture above while on a nature trail in a suburb of Atlanta.  It’s nothing but the side of a bridge.  Seeing this bridge made me think about how important bridges are in all of our lives.  We don’t often notice them until they disrupt our quality of life, by not giving us access to something, or provoking some kind of emotion (as in fear when crossing a bridge, the nostalgia of an old bridge in an old town).  Bridges are all around us.  They can be physical structures, people or situations that we find ourselves in.  It’s important to always recognize the value in a bridge, for without it we would not be where we are or who we are today.  It is also important to never destroy the very thing that brought you over because you may need it to get back home, or to a place of comfort and confidence.   Think about all of the bridges in your life and see how God used them to get you where you are currently and be thankful.

I hope this helps someone.

Headed to Maastricht…

October 28th, 2010 by demonterious No comments »

I am always reminded of just how blessed I am whenever I’m given the opportunity to travel the world and see places that I never knew existed!  It’s a blessing because there are many people that I know personally that may never have some of the opportunities that I’ve been given.  I am grateful!

This time, my journey leads me to Maastricht, in the Netherlands.  I’m playing for a Jazz festival there.  Traveling to Europe is always a great experience, and it would be a little better if the Euro to Dollar ratio wasn’t so bad!!!
Well anyways, I’m looking forward to waffles, chocolate (we’re flying in to Brussels) and great music!!  Pictures to come!
