My family cooked out on the day before Labor Day this year. We had a great time and ate really good food, but it left me with one small issue - How do I celebrate the actual holiday? Celebrations are always equated with good food and Labor Day 2009 was no different. I was introduced to Papi’s Cuban and Caribbean Grill in midtown Atlanta, on the corner of Ponce De Leon and Myrtle Ave. I have to admit that I wasn’t really in the mood to try new food but after stepping into the restaurant, all of my apprehensions went away.

My comfort level in new places has a lot to do with simply how things look. The restaurant has big windows, like the one above, that allow a great amount of natural light to illuminate the entire place. Everything looks really clean and the pictures and ornaments make it feel as though you’re walking into an authentic eatery that could be on any street in Cuba. When you enter the front of the restaurant you are happily greeted by the cooks and Cuban influenced music. My initial intentions were to order the food and take it home, but as I took a minute to read over the menu I figured, why not stay and get the full experience.

We seated ourselves and were immediately greeted by a server. There weren’t too many people there when we initially sat down but within a matter of minutes the place seemed to fill with a lot of people seemingly from a myriad of backgrounds, providing me with a feel for how popular the place is. The menu is full of many tasty items and they are all reasonably priced. I ordered the Pollo Cuban sandwich, which is a grilled chicken sandwich with Swiss cheese and your normal sandwich dressings, fries and a side order of sweet plantains. The fries were delivered first, so I was a little caught off guard because I’m used to getting all of the food at the same time. When the sandwich arrived I took a bite and was taken aback at how incredible it tasted. The sandwich is pretty big and filling so it took only one half to fill me up. The sweet plantains were perfection!

I plan to go back soon to try more of the menu. So if you’re ever in the neighborhood, stop by and try Papi’s Cuban and Caribbean Grill. You’ll love it!

Here are a few pics of the menu. See if there’s anything you would like!
