Barack Obama has been pointing how McCain has been very misleading in his assertions that the economy is fundamentally sound.  Just to support his stance look at these numbers since the Republicans have been in office (beginning Inauguration Day 2001):

1. The unemployment rate has increased from 4.2% to 6.1%
2. The budget as gone from a $281 Billion surplus to a $357 Billion deficit
3. The debt has grown from %5.7 Trillion to $9.7 Trillion
4. Everyone knows how the price of gas has increased!

Is McCain serious?  Yes.  He really is.  Look at how his surrogate tries to support him:
