Playing in Dar Es Salaam

We’ve been playing here in Dar since Sunday night. Sunday’s performance was AFAR with the Parapanda Theatre Lab.

We met with them earlier in the day, shared music and performed together Sunday night at the University of Dar Es Salaam. It turned out to be a pretty good show, but we confirmed that the culture here is for people to sit back and watch you perform. We’re used to being back home where the people party with you as you play, but that’s not the case here. It’s really hard to get used how people enjoy live music here, but AFAR is still rocking hard!
Check out this pic. The people at Parapanda showed us how they tune the native drums here. They use heat to stretch the skin over the drum. I understood it when I saw it, but I never thought about it myself.

Monday’s events were centered around the Music Crossroads. This was an awesome group of musicians that performed for us. In addition to their performance, we played for them and this all led to one huge jam session. It was really great to share music with our brothers and sisters.

At one point, there were about 25 people stuffed into this really small room. It was blazing hot but it was worth it.

Brother BlackFist is killing it on the drums:

Now, Give the drummer some (the other drummer)

I’m trying to get a little bit of the action:
